SUPPORT SERVICES

  1.  The Sooke School Board provides a number of support and counselling services:

A.  Counselling Services:
A school based counsellor is assigned to Sooke Elementary School and attends our school once a week. The duties range from school based classroom and small group intervention, parental request, student initiated meeting, or other involved agencies.

B.  Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program:
District specialist provides assistance and extra instruction to students with severe hearing difficulties.

C.  Home Bound Program:
The school district will provide home instruction for those students unable to attend school for extended periods of time.

D.  Psychometrician:
A district psychometrician provides assessment for students who require evaluation beyond that done by the school's learning assistant teacher.

E.  Speech Therapy:
Professional speech therapy is available from a district specialist.

F.  Occupational and Physio Therapy:  
Occupational and Physio Therapy are available to students with fine or gross motor difficulties.


 2.  LEARNING ASSISTANCE/READING RECOVERY
  
Some Learning Assistance is provided to students whose learning needs cannot be adequately met in the regular classroom setting in one or more areas. Sooke also has an early intervention Reading Recovery Program to help first grade students develop successful literacy skills.

 3. PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL  

Parental involvement in the school is supported and encouraged. The Parent Advisory Council assists with and initiates a wide variety of activities for Sooke. General meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. . Events are organized throughout the year and participation is open to any parent of a Sooke Elementary student.

 4. PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRAMS   
 
The public health nurse visits Sooke Elementary each week to deliver health promotion and disease prevention programs to the school community. Referrals for health related issues are welcomed from staff, students and families.  The nurse is available to work with individuals and small groups and is available in the classroom or for school wide learning activities.

 5. SCHOOL PLANNING COUNCIL   

The School Planning Council is made up of three parents, one teacher and the Principal.  Elections for the parent positions are held annually in October.  The School Planning Council meets regularly to review school data and further the school growth plan.

 6.  SCHOOL MEALS PROGRAM

A Hot lunch is served 4 days a week with a cold lunch served on Fridays.  This program is offered on a pay what you can afford basis and is open to all students.  We hope this program ensures that no child goes hungry.
